Health insurance

As a student in higher education, you are covered by the social security system. However, the terms and conditions of coverage may vary according to your situation.
Membership of a social security scheme is mandatory (except for foreign students from the European Union). Health insurance is free. Students will not be asked to pay any fees at the start of the school year.

International students

The first thing to check is whether your situation allows you to benefit from health insurance, or whether there is an agreement between your country and France.

New student

For first-time enrolment in a higher education establishment, you remain covered by your current social security plan. It's usually the parents'insurance.

You are insured from the age of 18 and, on application to your local health insurance fund, from the age of 16.

You must, if you haven't already, create your personal Ameli space (via the website or application) and update your information in order toto be well taken care of.

Student already enrolled

Nothing changes for you. You remain attached to the same social security scheme (general scheme, agricultural scheme or other special schemes, generally that of your parents or legal guardians) free of charge up to age 24.

Good habits to adopt for proper reimbursement

  • Create your Ameli account (also available as an app on Android or iOS), so you can track your reimbursements and take care of all your health formalities whenever and wherever you want.
  • Update your Vitale card at a pharmacy or health insurance fund (CPAM, MSA...).
  • Mail your personal bank detais to your caisse (which can be modified if necessary via your Ameli account).
  • Declare your attending physician.

Contact your primary health insurance fund

Make sure you have your carte Vitale before contacting your caisse primaire d'assurance maladie.
  • By e-mail: log in to your Ameli account, under "Mes démarches".
  • By telephone: 3646, free service + cost of a call, Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 5.30pm.
  • From abroad: dial +33 184 90 36 46 (free service + cost of a call, varies according to telephone operator).
