What is a gap year?
At Université Grenoble Alpes (UGA), a gap year is a period of one academic year or semester during which a student enrolled in a course at the university temporarily suspends it in order to gain significant or complementary experience in his or her field, broaden his or her horizons or refine his or her choice of career direction.
During the gap year year or semester, the student is enrolled at the university in the course he or she will be enrolling in when he or she returns from the gap year , and therefore retains his or her student status and associated benefits, unlike a simple interruption in studies.
What's the gap year for?
This parenthesis can take many forms:
- Employment contract.
- Civic service.
- Voluntary and/or international work.
- Internships.
- Formation separated from its original formation.
- Business creation project.
- Personal experience at the service of career orientation.
Who's the gap year for?
The gap year is open to all students (or future students) enrolled in initial training at UGA in bachelor's degrees, professional bachelor's degrees, master's degrees, engineering degrees, health training and doctorates.
You are a student or future student in a bachelor's degree, professional bachelor's degree, master's degree, health studies or doctorate.
You must complete the gap year application form and submit it to the academic department of the course you will be enrolling in at the end of the gap year, in exchange for an acknowledgement of receipt dated the day of submission.

Please note: gap year requests submitted after the start of classes will not be considered. To find out more about the UGA gap year , please consult the implementation text.
If you are planning to study abroad or in an overseas territory, you must complete the UGA online security form no later than 15 days before your departure. You will then need to send your gap year referent the validation e-mail received following your request.
You need to make sure that the countries you wish to visit are not identified as representing a security risk, and that your social protection is appropriate for your trip (health insurance, repatriation assistance, etc.).
Mandatory documents to be attached to the application form :
- Cover letter detailing the project and how the gap year will be achieved.
- Transcripts of grades for the current year (for students from outside the UGA).
- Any documents needed to clarify the project (if applicable).

You are a student or future student at the École nationale supérieure d'architecture de Grenoble (ENSAG).
At ENSAG, the gap year year is closely supervised: an agreement is signed between the student, the school management and a mentor teacher, setting out how the gap year will unfold, the links and support it will receive, and how it will culminate in the submission of an activity report.

You are a student or future student at Grenoble INP-UGA
At Grenoble INP, the gap year year is supervised by a pedagogical advisor who helps maintain the link with the school. The project must be clearly defined for the entire period.
