Accommodation expenses

Watch out for the first month!

The expenses involved in moving into a new home are numerous and can quickly exceed €1,000: housing installation costs, university registration fees, insurance, transport, subscriptions...

Installation

  • Security deposit: equivalent to one month's rent excluding charges (unfurnished accommodation), or two months' rent excluding charges in certain residences and/or furnished accommodation. It is required when you sign the rental contract.
  • The first month's rent.
  • If you rent through an estate agent, agency fees and inventory of fixtures will be charged.
  • Subscription to water and electricity contracts (excluding student residences): approx. €50 to start up an electricity contract.
  • Home insurance: between €50 and €100 per year, depending on the type of accommodation.

Rent

  • Crous university residence: €200 to €500 per month.
  • Private student residence: €450 to €800 per month.
  • Studio or small apartment: €400 to €500 per month.
  • Shared room: approx. 350€ per month.
  • Room or apartment in a student residence (maximum age 26): €375 to €555 per month.
Depending on the family or personal situation, a CAF housing assistance is possible. Please note! Be sure to check with your parents before applying, as this may result in the loss of benefits paid to the family.

Transport costs

They vary according to your main mode of transport: public transport, bicycle or car.

Prefer cycling or taking public transport, which are faster and more economical.

Bus, streetcar and bike hire

In Grenoble
Subscriptions for TAG public transport or Mvélo+ bike hire vary according to your age: from €15 for under-24s to €60 per month for TAG public transport, and from €15 to €25 per month for Mvélo+ bike hire.

In Valence
Subscriptions for Citéa buses or Libélo bike rentals vary according to your age: from €10 to €20 per month for Citéa buses, from €10 to €15 per month for a Libélo bike rental.

SNCF network

  • Train: Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Illico Liberté Jeunes card (under 26): €15 per year.
  • Train: youth card (12 to 27 years): €49 per year.
To estimate the monthly cost of train journeys, consult the fares applied to your journeys according to the discounts to which you are entitled and the number of times you wish to use the train.
