“Smart'Pause” Challenge: How about testing your digital freedom? How long can you live without checking your smartphone? In the morning, slip it into an envelope, seal it, write the closing time… and resist!
The principle is simple: hold out as long as possible. When you give in, note the time you opened it and discover your digital autonomy score! There's nothing to win... except perhaps over yourself.
This friendly challenge can be played alone, with colleagues, or in teams. In each department, lab, or promotion, create a record board to compare your "disconnection times": who will last the longest without "cracking"?
Beyond the game itself, Smart'Pause invites everyone to ask themselves: are we truly in control of our habits, or are we somewhat prisoners of our screens? For a few hours, free your attention, rediscover the pleasure of direct interaction, concentration, and mental availability… and discover how this changes your day.
Need ideas to fill all this newfound free time?
Have a coffee or lunch “100% present” with a colleague;
Read a few pages of a book, a printed magazine, or a printed article;
Organize your office… or your thoughts;
Walk, meditate, observe your surroundings, talk, dream: in short, reconnect with yourself in a different way. Want to extend the experience at home?
Establish a “smartphone-free zone” during meals;
Try one screen-free evening per week;
Turn off non-essential notifications after a certain hour.
This pause is also an opportunity to reflect on the overall impact of our digital habits.
On the psyche: continuous distraction, anxiety, cognitive fatigue;
On living together: fragmented attention, progressive isolation;
Regarding the planet's resources: energy, rare metals, accelerated renewal of equipment.
Analyzing its use and the desire to go beyond the simple challenge of the envelope?
Take a few minutes to look at your smartphone usage statistics: time spent per day, per week, per application, number of unlocks, notifications received… On most phones, this information is accessible in a few steps.
On Android: open Settings > Digital Wellbeing and Parental Controls > Dashboard to view your screen time, most used apps and history;
On iPhone: go to Settings > Screen Time > See All Activity to view your daily and weekly averages, by category and by app.
Next, observe:
Your critical periods (morning, late evening, at work, during downtime).
The most time-consuming applications (social networks, games, news, messaging apps…).
Consider what you could do instead of some of that time (reading, sports, face-to-face interactions, rest, creativity, volunteering, etc.). The goal isn't to make you feel guilty, but to become aware of your habits so that, if you wish, you can make small adjustments: limit certain apps, schedule screen-free periods, or reinvest some of that time in activities you truly enjoy.
