Extend the life of your computer with co-repair workshops!
March 5, 2026
What if you learned to repair your computer yourself? Participate in computer co-repair workshops: a collaborative format to extend the life of your equipment and reduce the environmental impact of digital technology.
As part of actions promoting responsible digital practices and the reuse of computer equipment, co-repair workshops for computers are offered to staff, students and students of the University of Grenoble Alpes and its constituent institutions.
The goal is to repair your computer to extend its lifespan, while raising awareness about more responsible digital use. Inspired by the model of repair cafesThe approach is based on learning by doing, with the support of professionals: IT technicians from IT departments and experts in eco-responsible digital technology.
Workshop organization
Participants bring their own computer (laptop or desktop) or are loaned one during the workshop.
The workshop takes place in two parts:
Session 1: Discovery and diagnosis (12:30-2:00 PM)
Diagnosis, computer setup, and discovery of its anatomy
Component manipulation
Understanding the socio-environmental issues related to manufacturing and use: metal extraction, life cycle, obsolescence, open-source alternatives
Session 2: Repair (12:30-2:00 PM)
Two weeks later, in order to allow time for the search and acquisition of any replacement parts (purchased by the people concerned or provided by the Fablab), the beneficiaries return for the repair.
Thematic workshops are planned to complement the programming: discovering open source (the Linux universe and free applications), troubleshooting specific problems (adding RAM, installing an SSD). The workshop could also expand to include mobile phone repair from mid-2026.
