UGA introduces gynecological leave to better reconcile health and studies

September 23, 2025
From the start of the 2025-2026 academic year, students can benefit from authorized absences for health gynecological!

At the CFVU of June 2025, a resolution establishing “gynecological leave” for students was adopted.

What is student gynecological leave?

From the start of the 2025-2026 academic year, any student whose “ health gynecological" is "disabling or characteristic of a chronic pathology" will be able to benefit from this leave equivalent to a justified absence upon simple declaration. People suffering from occasional disorders will be able to benefit from the authorizations for unjustified absences already existing.

How to benefit from gynecological leave?

Any menstruating student, depending on their situation:

  • anyone suffering from a health gynecological condition "disabling or characteristic of a chronic pathology" (such as: endometriosis, hemorrhagic periods, other gynecological pathology), whether diagnosed or not, can send the completed gynecological leave declaration template to their academic manager at the start of the academic year (available below). This will entitle them to an unlimited number of absences justified by the disability caused by their health gynecological.

  • anyone suffering from occasional disorders linked to health gynecological (e.g. painful menstruation, cramps, occasional headaches) may benefit from authorization for unjustified absence, within the limit of the days defined by the regulations of the student's training.

In the event of absence from exams and continuous assessments, the rules defined by the study regulations of the student's training will apply.

Is it necessary to justify one's absence?

No, no medical documentation is required. If you have any difficulties, students can refer to the CFVU decision available below.

To benefit from gynecological leave, you are simply asked to send the completed declaration template to your academic manager at the start of the academic year (available below).

On the other hand, if students suffer from chronic or recurring pain, they can contact professionals health in order to be accompanied and/or diagnosed. It is possible to request an appointment with the student health service in Grenoble , which offers consultations with marriage and family counselors as well as with gynecologists, or in Valence, with the youth health center .

In accordance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), all students have the right to rectify the information they have provided, including the right to delete it. Declarations are only kept for the academic year in question and are then subject to deletion. All declarations must be renewed annually by the students concerned.

Why student gynecological leave?

As a reminder, around 10% of menstruating people suffer from endometriosis in France. One in two menstruating people has painful periods (sources: Barometer Règles élémentaires x Opinion Way, 2022; Endometriosis: update on research advances, MESR).

The adoption of this authorization of absences for health gynecological is a flagship action of the new Action Plan on gender equality 2025-2028 , which has just been adopted for the UGA and its component establishments. This new action plan has, in accordance with ministerial guidelines, integrated several new axes including that of "acting for the health women”. These actions aim to reduce structural inequalities between women and men, linked to the health gynecological and its impact on study and work conditions.
